How often have you put off doing something because the timing just didn’t seem right? Have you delayed tackling a project, or put a task aside? We have all done these things.
We have all heard this before, but it is true. So, I’m here to remind you it is a good idea to bite the bullet and tackle that thing on your to-do list that you keep moving to “Tomorrow”.
I have one piece of advice for you that I find keeps me going better than anything else, and it’s just like what your parents told you when you were little – “chew your food”. “What?!”, you say. Well, now that I’ve made you chuckle and maybe stop and think, you will probably get it.
- Don’t bite off too much at once; take your daunting task one step at a time.
- Then, celebrate your progress instead of berating yourself for not doing more
- Remember your childhood stories and be like the little engine or Dory the fish and keep going till you get there (“I think I can, I think I can”… “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming”)
The only other part of getting things done is staying focused. Dory was good at focusing, but not remembering what she had focused on in the first place. Have you ever had that problem? I find as I get older, it is getting to be a more common occurrence.
So, my final bit of advice to help ensure your success is don’t get distracted. In the interest of getting something done, sometimes we end up tackling a little task that has nothing to do with the project at hand. Cleaning up the office coffee room, for example, will not help you organize your training calendar. You are delaying the inevitable. Just dig in and get started. As Tony Robbins likes to say,
Most people fail in life because they major in minor things.
Just get started, and don’t give up. You’ll get there.
